NBA Champions 1980s

A rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, and between their teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, led to a surge in the popularity of the NBA in the 1980’s.

The Lakers won four titles in the decade and were runners-up three more times, making seven finals appearances in 10 years.

The Celtics won three titles in the 80’s and had two second place finishes, making five finals appearances in 10 years.

The decade ended with the Detroit Pistons, led by Isiah Thomas,
winning back to back titles in 1988-1989 and 1989-1990.
