Kobe won the regular season NBA MVP award after the 2007-08 season. He led the Lakers to the NBA finals that year but the Boston Celtics beat the Lakers 4-2 in the finals to claim the crown.
Bryant and the Lakers came back in 2008-09 to win the championship, defeating the Orlando Magic in five games in the finals. Kobe was named Finals MVP and became the first recipient of the award after it was renamed the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award.
